Lone Star Lake remains under Watch Advisory for harmful algal blooms

Lone Star Lake remains under a Watch Advisory for blue-green algal blooms that may be harmful to humans and animals. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment tested the water on Aug. 3, and the results kept the advisory in place.

KDHE placed Lone Star Lake under a Watch Advisory on July 24. The lake is in southwest Douglas County.

KDHE discourages swimming, wading and water skiing near visible blooms. Do not let pets or livestock drink from affected water. Watch Advisory recommendations include:

  • Avoid areas where algae has accumulated.
  • Do not let people or pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.
  • Boating and fishing are safe; however, inhaling spray from the water may affect some individuals.
  • Clean fish well with potable water and eat only the fillet portion.

If people or animals develop nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, irritated eyes, seizures, breathing problems or other unexplained illness after exposure to harmful algae, contact a doctor or veterinarian.

Blooms are unpredictable, according to KDHE. They can develop rapidly and may move across a lake due to wind or water currents, so visitors should use their best judgment.

Signage is posted at Lone Star Lake about the advisory. KDHE is scheduled to retest the water on Aug. 17 and provide an update.
